How to Save and Export Gemini Chats: Docs, Share Links, Takeout and Markdown

By og.cc.cd · Published · Updated · 4 min read

TL;DR: Gemini has no single all-chats file: export one answer to Google Docs, share a public link, use Google Takeout for activity, or paste the chat into our tool to save it as Markdown.

Unlike Claude and ChatGPT, the Gemini app does not hand you a single file of every conversation. You can still keep your chats — you just need to pick the right tool for the job. Here are the official options and their trade-offs.

Paste a Gemini chat into the viewer →All guides

Option 1: Export a response to Google Docs or Gmail

Below any response on gemini.google.com, click Share & export → Export to Docs. Gemini creates a new document in your Google Drive. Share & export → Draft in Gmail creates an email draft instead, and a response that contains a table shows Export to Sheets at the bottom right of the table. Python code can go to Colab and code to Replit.

Good for: keeping one great answer. Limits: it works per response, not per conversation, and Workspace accounts may see different options depending on admin settings. From Docs you can then use File → Download to get .docx or PDF.

Option 2: Share the whole conversation as a link

Below a response, click Share → Share conversation. Gemini copies a g.co/gemini/share link to the entire chat. Google warns that this creates a public link: anyone who has it can read the conversation, and images you uploaded become viewable and downloadable from the shared page.

Good for: showing a chat to a colleague. Not good for: private archiving — a public URL is the opposite of private.

A few details from Google’s help page are worth knowing before you share:

  • The shared page is a snapshot: if you continue the chat afterwards, the shared page does not change.
  • It includes AI-generated artifacts such as Canvas documents, images and videos. Google does not add your name or account to the URL or page.
  • If the chat used a Gem, you choose whether to include the Gem’s instructions.
  • Anyone with the link can reshare it and continue the chat in their own Gemini (with some exceptions, such as chats created with Gems).
  • To revoke: on gemini.google.com go to Settings & help → Your public links and click Delete public link (or Delete all links). Deleting the link does not delete the chat from your activity, nor copies others made by continuing it.

Option 3: Google Takeout (everything, as data)

For a full backup, Google’s help center documents this path:

  1. Go to takeout.google.com, signed in with the account you use for Gemini.
  2. Under “Select data to include”, click Deselect all.
  3. Tick Gemini if you also want your Gems.
  4. Tick My Activity, click All activity data included, choose Deselect all in the pop-up, tick Gemini Apps, then OK.
  5. Click Next step, choose delivery (email link, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box), frequency, and .zip or .tgz, then Create export.

Google says most archives arrive the same day but it can take a few hours to a few days, and an emailed download link stays active for 7 days. Downloading does not delete anything from Google’s servers.

What you get is an activity log, not a neat transcript: prompts and responses are recorded as activity entries, so the conversation structure is flatter than what you see in the app. Expect to post-process it.

Option 4: Copy, paste, convert

For a single conversation you want as clean Markdown, Word or PDF, copying is often the fastest route:

  1. Open the chat in Gemini, select the conversation text and copy it.
  2. Paste it into the box on our AI Chat Export page and click Parse pasted chat. Lines such as “You said” / “Gemini said” (or “You:” / “Gemini:”) are recognised as speakers.
  3. Save as Markdown, Word or PDF. The page also accepts the Takeout MyActivity.json file (beta).

Your browser’s own Print → Save as PDF also works on the chat page, but usually includes the sidebar and other interface elements.

Work and school accounts

If you sign in with a Google Workspace account, what you can export depends on your organisation. Google’s help pages note that export options vary by availability and Workspace settings, that Export to Colab is not available for Workspace accounts, that exporting code to Replit is not available for work or school accounts, and that you may not see the Share option at all if your organisation has disabled conversation sharing. In that case, copying text into a local tool, or asking your admin about Takeout, are the remaining routes.

A simple routine that works

  1. When a conversation produces something you will need again — a plan, a piece of code, a decision — copy it out the same day while it is easy to find.
  2. Convert it to Markdown and keep it next to the project it belongs to.
  3. Schedule a Takeout export (Takeout supports recurring exports) as a safety net for everything else.
  4. Review your public links occasionally and delete the ones you no longer need.

Which option should you use?

Keep one answerExport to Docs

Before relying on any of these for record-keeping, check your Gemini Apps Activity setting in your Google account, since it controls what is kept in your activity history.
