MCP Config Generator

Build a valid MCP server config for Claude Desktop (claude_desktop_config.json), Cursor (.cursor/mcp.json) or VS Code (.vscode/mcp.json). Add local or remote servers, start from presets, then copy or download.

TL;DR: Generate a working MCP config for Claude Desktop (claude_desktop_config.json), Cursor (.cursor/mcp.json) or VS Code (.vscode/mcp.json) — the key difference is mcpServers vs servers — with presets for Filesystem, Fetch, Playwright and GitHub.

How to use the MCP config generator

    1. Pick the app you use. The output switches between the mcpServers format (Claude Desktop, Cursor, portable .mcp.json) and VS Code’s servers format.
    2. Add servers from a preset or by hand: a local server is a command plus arguments (and optional environment variables); a remote server is an HTTPS URL plus optional headers.
    3. Replace placeholders such as /path/to/allowed/folder or <your-token>, copy the JSON into the file shown under “Where to save it”, and restart or reload the app.

Presets: Filesystem (@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem), Fetch (uvx mcp-server-fetch, needs uv), Playwright (@playwright/mcp, needs Node.js 18+), GitHub (remote endpoint https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ or the ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server Docker image). Formats checked against the official docs on 2026-10-20.

    FAQ

    Where is claude_desktop_config.json?

On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. On Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. The easiest way is Claude Desktop → Settings → Developer → Edit Config, which creates the file if it does not exist. Restart Claude Desktop completely after editing.

Why is my remote server missing from the Claude Desktop output?

The Claude Desktop config file starts local (stdio) servers. Remote MCP servers are added in Claude as custom connectors: Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste the server URL.

What is the difference between “servers” and “mcpServers”?

VS Code’s own mcp.json format (.vscode/mcp.json or the user-profile mcp.json) uses a top-level servers object and an explicit type. Claude Desktop, Cursor and the portable .mcp.json use mcpServers. Copying one into the other without renaming the key is a common reason a server does not show up.

Where should I put API keys?

Put them in the server’s env (local servers) or headers (remote servers), and keep files with real secrets out of git. Cursor can read ${env:NAME} from your environment, and VS Code’s format supports ${input:…} prompts so the value is not stored in the file.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The JSON is assembled in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
