Volcengine Ark (火山方舟) is ByteDance’s model platform for Doubao and other models. Getting a key takes a minute, but a key alone is not enough — each model has to be enabled before you can call it.

Create the key

  1. Register at https://console.volcengine.com/auth/signup (or sign in).
  2. Open the Ark console. Optionally switch the project in the bottom-left corner — a key belongs to the project it was created in and cannot be used across projects.
  3. Go to API Key 管理 (API key management) → 创建 API Key → confirm or edit the 名称 (name) → 创建. The key then appears in the API key list (获取 API Key 并配置).

Enable the model before your first call: open 开通管理 (model activation) at https://console.volcengine.com/ark/region:ark+cn-beijing/openManagement and turn on the model you want (快速入门).

  • Keys created after 17 Sep 2026, 12:00 (UTC+8) use a new plaintext format; older keys keep working. The new format itself is not described on the page.
  • One main account can have up to 50 keys. Each key can be restricted to specific Model IDs, endpoints (接入点) or IP addresses.

Free quota and real-name verification

  • New users get a free inference quota on registration, counted separately for each model and shared across the main account. It only covers online inference tokens, not batch inference. The amounts are not repeated here — check the official page.
  • Turn on 安心体验模式 (“worry-free trial mode”) to avoid being charged beyond the free quota.
  • After the free quota is used up you must complete real-name verification and manually enable the model’s inference service to keep using it (免费推理额度).
  • Account requirements at sign-up, payment methods and minimum top-up are not stated on the pages we checked.

Base URL and authentication

  • Base URL: https://ark.cn-beijing.volces.com/api/v3 — compatible with the OpenAI SDK, for both the Responses and Chat APIs.
  • Header: Authorization: Bearer $ARK_API_KEY; keep the key in ARK_API_KEY, not in code.
  • Quick-start model: doubao-seed-1-6-251015.

Common gotchas

  • Call fails with a valid key — the model has not been enabled under 开通管理, or the free quota ran out and you have not completed real-name verification and enabled the service.
  • Key from another project — keys are project-scoped; create one in the project you are calling from.
  • Restricted key — if you limited the key to certain models, endpoints or IPs, calls outside those limits will not pass.
  • Safety. Put the key in an environment variable, keep it out of Git and out of any code that runs in a browser or mobile app, and replace it if it is ever exposed. The API keys overview has the full checklist.

Does the free quota cover batch jobs?

No — it only offsets online inference tokens.

Why does my new key look different from my old one?

Keys created after 17 Sep 2026, 12:00 (UTC+8) use a new plaintext format. Old keys remain valid.

How many keys can I create?

Up to 50 per main account.
