What ChatGPT Work does

  • Uses your apps, files, tools, browser and approved business context to create docs, decks, spreadsheets, sites, reports and analyses.
  • Takes a goal, schedules recurring work or watches for updates, and checks in “when judgment or approval matters”.
  • Plan mode: gathers context, asks questions and shows a step-by-step plan you approve before work starts.
  • The ChatGPT desktop app has a built-in browser with multiple tabs for agentic workflows; OpenAI lists more than 1,400 plugins.

Which plans include it

Plus$20/month, monthly billing onlyExpanded access on desktop, web and mobile
Pro$100, $200 or $500/monthLonger Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions; Dot, an always-on agent

OpenAI states that API usage is billed separately and is not included in Plus. Pro 500 is the only Pro tier with “Ultrafast” mode.

Turn it on

  1. Sign in at chatgpt.com (or create an account).
  2. To upgrade: click your profile icon → Upgrade Plan → Get Plus (OpenAI’s own steps). Pro is chosen on the pricing page.
  3. Open ChatGPT Work from chatgpt.com/work (“Try now”). On Free and Go, install the desktop app first, because Work is desktop-only on those plans.
  4. Connect only the apps the first task needs; you can add more later.

A safe first task

OpenAI’s own example prompts are a good template because they keep output unsent for review. Try:

Find the emails I need to answer. Summarize each one, draft replies,
and leave them unsent for review.

Switch on Plan mode first, read the plan, then approve. Once it works, turn it into a scheduled task (for example a weekly brief from your calendar and docs).

FAQ

Is there an annual Plus plan?

No. OpenAI’s help centre says Plus is billed monthly and does not support annual billing; Pro is also billed monthly.

Can I buy more usage?

On eligible plans you can buy credits in Settings → Usage; OpenAI lists Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins as supported.
